What is it the old Yuletide sing-along says about "we need a little Christmas"? This holiday season, we need a little everything. While businesses and shoppers alike wail "Blue Christmas" instead of "Silver Bells"—and the national mood tilts back and forth between despair and optimistic exuberance—seasonal depression has taken on a whole new meaning.
Then why do we feel so freakin' cheerful? Because we're here in a city we love, surrounded by indomitable people who were born to laugh at tornadoes. If we're all to make the most of meager resources, let's do it with our wit about us as well as our wits. This year our Holiday Guide offers backhanded salutes to the gift-giving, food-making excess that typically causes so much seasonal stress. We've also included hints for cool, offbeat presents that won't deplete your savings, as well as some recommended charities and nonprofits that need a helping hand this season.
So fan the embers in the fireplace, turn the thermostat down to a balmy 62 degrees, bundle up in your favorite armchair with a blankie, and let us reassure each other that we'll be just fine and dandy. All things told, it's a wonderful life.
